Ration card is a document issued by governments to their residents. One of the functions of the ration card is that it allows Indian households who are part of the economically disadvantaged sections of the Indian society to buy essential goods for less money. A ration card holder can purchase products with the help of the document, such as food items, kerosene, cereals, pulses and dairy products, among others.

In a way, the ration card has proved to be of great help to the citizens who have found it difficult to buy expensive grocery store products. Generally, citizens who come under Below Poverty Line (BPL) have been found using ration cards frequently. Ration card also serves as a proof of identity and address. It is one of the many documents that a person can submit while applying for other forms of government-issued identification.
