Ration card is a document issued by governments to their residents. One of the functions of the ration card is that it allows Indian households who are part of the economically disadvantaged sections of the Indian society to buy essential goods for less money. A ration card holder can purchase products with the help of the document, such as food items, kerosene, cereals, pulses and dairy products, among others.
In a way, the ration card has proved to be of great help to the citizens who have found it difficult to buy expensive grocery store products. Generally, citizens who come under Below Poverty Line (BPL) have been found using ration cards frequently. Ration card also serves as a proof of identity and address. It is one of the many documents that a person can submit while applying for other forms of government-issued identification.
Types of Ration Cards:
As per the updates from the UIDAI, over 5 documents are being considered valid for proof of identity in Aadhaar card. The UIDAI accepts 5 documents for date of birth and 9 documents for Proof of Address (PoA). Full list is here:
There are four types of ration cards. These categories are decided on the basis of total household income.
White Ration Card: A citizen who is above the poverty line as per the definition of the government is given a white ration card.
Orange Ration Card: Orange ration card is issued to those citizens who are living life just below the poverty line. Orange ration cards allow citizens of this particular socio-economic group to buy food grains and food grains at highly subsidized rates, which are revised by the state governments at the right time.
Yellow Ration Card: Citizens who earn annual income which is less than the remuneration received by the Orange Card holder are given Yellow Ration Card. Yellow ration card holders are generally the most financially weak. In addition, they are the top priority for the government in terms of provision of food and groceries. Citizens with Yellow Ration Card do such work which is volatile or seasonal in nature, due to which they may be unemployed, homeless or both at the same time.

A copy of the state application form
- Proof of Identity (Acceptable Documents: Driving License, Election ID, Government ID Card, Passport)
- Residence Proof (Acceptable Documents: Telephone Bill, Electricity, LPG Receipt, Bank Passbook, Rental Agreement)
- Photograph of the applicant
- Proof of applicant’s annual income
- Your cancel/surrender ration card, if you have one
How to apply Ration card?
Apply for ration card, first of all you have to join Digital India Portal.
To join you need to register for Retailer ID on Digital Seva Portal
Digital India Portal is a banking, bill payment, government and non-government service provider.

- Visit the website of Digital India Portal and register for Retailer ID.
- After registration, you will get the login details of Digital India Portal Portal
- Then you have to login that id and go to Ration Card option
- You will have to fill out a form for ration card.
- After Ration Card form submit Digital India Portal does all process and verification.
